Oops: Colbert wins NASA space station name contest
2 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA's online contest to name a new room at the international space station went awry. Comedian Stephen Colbert won.

The name "Colbert" beat out NASA's four suggested options in the space agency's effort to have the public help name the addition. The new room will be launched later this year.

NASA's mistake was allowing write-ins. Colbert urged viewers of his Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report," to write in his name. And they complied, with 230,539 votes. That clobbered Serenity, one of the NASA choices, by more than 40,000 votes. Nearly 1.2 million votes were cast by the time the contest ended Friday.

NASA reserves the right to choose an appropriate name. Agency spokesman John Yembrick said NASA will decide in April, but will give top vote-getters "the most consideration."

If they are smart they will keep it. While cool nasa names are awesome, having some one with as much his finger on the pulse of youth and the younger adult generation would be a very good thing for gaining more interest in science and nasa.. plus it would break the mold of the nasa style..dont get ,me wrong, I truly dig alot of the names that nasa comes up with.. but not everything in space has to have a kewl name.....

\Though I have to say it is kinda eerie the amount of influence he has...all from being funny...

Yeah they should totally keep it. It would be a smart move on their part. It would help gain interest in NASA in general, in space issues, the space station etc...
Man, Colbert does this kind of stuff all the time, he's had other things named for him as well, it's hilarious.
If only we had Comedy Central.....sigh....

Yeah, now I have to name my second child "Colbert". Darn internet naming contest write-in options. What were we thinking?

I hope they put a TV in the Colbert Wing of the Station so that you can watch The Colbert Report.

Last I heard, they decided NOT to name it after Colbert, despite the contest, and instead decided to name the............. treadmill after him.
Lovely!
Ah, it's still cool I guess. Bit of a downgrade, though.
