Good piece about the stunning arrogance and evasiveness displayed by David Addington and John Yoo during their appearances before the House Judiciary committee:

Defending the President as Tyrant

By Robert Parry
June 27, 2008

All over the world down through history, political leaders who have engaged in torture and other grotesque crimes of state have justified their actions as necessary to protect their governments or their people or themselves.

It was true when England’s King Edward I had William Wallace – “Braveheart” – drawn and quartered in 1305 for resisting the crown’s rule in Scotland, and a gruesome death was what King George III foresaw for America’s Founding Fathers in 1776 when they stood up to his abuses in the Colonies.

Kings and tyrants often inflicted special pain on people they viewed as challenging their authority and – at such times – they wiped away the rules of justice. But the United States was supposed to be different.

Wow, it is so infuriating seeing testimony from people who refuse to answer direct questions, and instead start complaining about them being "too hypothetical" or attempting to "put words in their mouth", when they are simple and clear questions that could be answered with a YES or NO.

It is pretty clear that the Bush Administration will do whatever to whoever at any time under the mysterious, vague cloak of "national security" and the "war on terror".

Yoo couldn't even answer whether or not the President had the authority to order someone buried alive, have a terror suspect's CHILD be tortured for information, or pull someon's fingernails out, or cut off their appendages.

Those examples were apparently too "hypothetical" simply because they may not have happened yet, despite the hearings being about LEGAL AUTHORITY to do such things IF the situation arose.
Every single thing coming out of this administration is sickeningly immoral, bathed in secrecy and darkness, and breaking so many laws so fast that no one can reasonably keep up with their treachery.

How someone could be confused as to which candidate to vote for this November is beyond me. As the article said, McCain thought that the Supreme Court ruling to give Guantanamo detainees access to lawyers and trials was so horrible that he called it "one of the worst decisions in the history of this country". Yes, not being able to indefinitely detain people without even knowing if they're guilty of anything is really terrible. I mean, who cares if they just happened to be swept up in a raid in Afghanistan and are completely innocent, just let them rot for the rest of their lives in a 5x5 cell, right? Nothing wrong with any of that, right???

I just hope these people will have to answer for all of this when they die, I really do.

January 2009 cannot come fast enough. The American people must put someone in charge that actually cares about the American people and their rights as laid out in the Constitution.
