Something's going wrong in our brains, it seems.
This article discusses the mental decline that is growing at epidemic rates, and yet it fails to discuss at all what might be causing it. Not even a hint of a whisper. What's up with that? Anyway, what do you think about this?

CHICAGO - A milder type of mental decline that often precedes Alzheimer’s disease is alarmingly more common than has been believed, and in men more than women, doctors reported Monday.

Nearly a million older Americans slide from normal memory into mild impairment each year, researchers estimate, based on a Mayo Clinic study of Minnesota residents.

That’s on top of the half million Americans who develop full-blown Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia — a problem sure to grow as baby boomers age. The oldest boomers turn 62 this year.

“We’re seeing that in fact there’s a much larger burgeoning problem out there” of people at risk of developing dementia, said Dr. Ronald Petersen, the Mayo scientist who led the study.

Dr. Ralph Nixon, a New York University psychiatrist and scientific adviser to the Alzheimer’s Association, was blunt.

“We’re facing a crisis,” he said.

There are no treatments now to prevent this mental slide or reverse it once it starts.

Perhaps this uninformational article is just an example of the decline of the mind? Or perhaps there is no real decline and it is just yet another reason for th epublic to fork over more cashola to Big Pharmacy?
Maybe its all the boomers eating cialis, viagra and the like?
Eating holes in brains for the purpose of an erection?
Or perhaps its something completly else?
I will speculate until my brain goes out.. hahahaah..

wow, that is rather uninformative, thanks.
I wonder if they just mean pharmaceuticals when they say "There are no treatments now to prevent this mental slide or reverse it once it starts. " Let me check my notes from school here (there's several repeats, I just copy and pasted):

Alzheimers:
Vitamin B11 (treatment), Vitamin E (prevention)

Phytotherapeutic Recommendations
-Vinca Minor (Periwinkle)

Orthomolecular Treatment
-Phosphatidylserine
-Resveratrol (red wine)
-Alpha-lipoic Acid

Dementia:
Phytotherapeutic Recommendations
-Vinca Minor (Periwinkle)
-Ginkgo Biloba

Senility
-Serine (early-onset)
-Phosphatidylserine (early onset)
-Resveratrol (early-onset)

Basic Gemmotherapeutic Treatment
-Alnus Glutinosa
-Olea Europaea (olive)

Memory Loss:
Phytotherapeutic Recommendations
-Ginkgo Biloba

Orthomolecular Treatment
-Phosphatidylserine
-Vinpocetine (short term memory)
-Resveratrol (red wine)
-Pregneneolone

Brain Boosters:
-Vinpocetine (periwinkle)
-Phosphatidylserine
-Acetyl-L-Carnitine
-Pregneneolone
-EPA/DHA. (omega-3 oils)
The research appears a bit mixed on Ginkgo Biloba, but research continues

and that doesn't even include the new nootropics (smart drugs) that are coming out or Chinese medicine in which acupuncture points and herbs exist for each of the above conditions... so yeah, no options at all I guess.

HA - Yeah what is the deal with that?
There was even a story on the local news yesterday about a guy with Alzheimers and how he was trying to deal with it, and he said the progression has been slowed dramatically by him simply working out regularly, riding his bike, etc... which is no surprise since physical activity has long been known to boost brain function, perhaps by increasing blood/oxygen to the brain.

But they make it seem like "You're screwed until we can whip up a $100-a-pill concoction for you all".

Ridiculous.
