Remember shorly before the 2004 presidential election, all of a sudden, out of the blue, the huge issue that stormed onto the scene, which ignited evangelicals and social conservatives everywhere, was Gay Marriage??? It just so happened to be during the presidential campaign, and it served to ignite the conservative "base" into banding together and helping out Bush at the polls, even though there was no direct link, the controversy helped Bush anyway.
Psychology, ya know?!

Well here we are 2 1/2 months from Election '08, McCain is hurtin' in his evangelical support, and *Gasp!* what's this?! The White House which has been pretty much quietly not having much to say the last few months, has suddenly sprung forth THIS onto the public! What timing! Who'd have thought that in the last waning months of the Bush administration, they'd suddenly care so much about this:

Associated Press
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Thursday proposed stronger job protections for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections.

Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said that health care professionals should not face retaliation from employers or from medical societies because they object to abortion.

"Freedom of conscience is not to be surrendered upon issuance of a medical degree," said Leavitt. "This nation was built on a foundation of free speech. The first principle of free speech is protected conscience."

The proposed rule, which applies to institutions receiving government money, would require as many as 584,000 employers ranging from major hospitals to doctors' offices and nursing homes to certify in writing that they are complying with several federal laws that protect the conscience rights of health care workers. Violations could lead to a loss of government funding and legal action to recoup federal money already paid.

Geez, looks like I'm voting Republican this year after all! :ohgod:

Like they truely give a shit about human life, seriously they are all concerned about unborn but cant wait to get their hands on 18 year olds to strap ak47s on them and toss em in some battle field to go kill or be killed..

So wtf does that mean? that they are going to shut down clinics and hospitals that do abortions? What is the "protection"?

oh man...

gays and abortion.. we are at war, on the brink of economic collapse, our rights and good standing with the gloabl community is practically nonexistent, We are on the brink of more wars.. DID I MENTION THAT WE ARE AT WAR.. you know that thing where people try and work through their differences by KILLING EACHOTHER... but the gays and the abortions thats the real important issues...

wow I could honestly debate for like a million days on the topics of gay marriage, abortion, war,and christianity. ..

All I see in the article is that doctors who don't ethically believe in abortion can't be penalized for not performing the procedure or for stating their disapproval of it. It sounds like they need to work on the wording, but the idea itself is positive, not negative. We should all be accorded that right.

Also, how is abortion not an important issue? The fact that there are other important issues doesn't make this any less of an issue.

I would say that abortion is an important issue I guess, and I have no problem at all with the protection of doctors who are against it.
I was only pointing out that Bush has been in office for almost eight years now and he just now decides that this is important enough to bring up, right before the election, when the whole idea of abortion is one of the two things that 'evangelicals' absolutely go CRAZY over.
I just got an e-mail from the "Family Research Council", a super Christian group that dissected an interview with both candidates asking about religious/spiritual issues, and the only two things that it brought up and spoke about were......(drum roll)......Gay marriage and Abortion.
Somehow many Christians have got it in their heads that those are the only two issues in society that are relevant when it comes to morality and God, so they pound away at them and get insanely fired up over them, whilst numbly skipping over the true moral monstrosities like war and the slaughter of thousands and thousands of people.

So, I fully agree with the notion of doctor protection, but it is also a none too subtle attempt to fire up the passions of these evangelical Christians to help get them to the voting booths and install McCain as next Dictator-In-Chief.

Yes, abortion and gay marriage are definitely two hot-button issues that get conveniently brought up on election years. But you can't deny the blatantly obvious fact that gays and Mexicans are taking over America, and when they do they'll without a doubt rip the unborn children from white women's wombs. This country has gone to hell and it's time for Jesus to come home, guide his dedicated flock to heaven, and leave all the unbelieving heathens for Satan's ARMEGEDDON :rocket:

That's precisely what I was getting at!
You are just more eloquent than I.
