Revealed: The headset that will mimic all five senses and make the virtual world as convincing as real life
article

A virtual reality helmet that recreates the sights, smells, sounds and even tastes of far-flung destinations has been devised by British scientists...

Scientists say the device will also enable users to greet friends and family on the other side of the world as though they were in the same room.

And students will even be able to find out what it was like to live in ancient Egypt, Rome or Greece.

Previously, scientists have only been able to use virtual reality technology to recreate sound and vision.

Now a team of British academics from York and Warwick universities are creating a virtual reality helmet they are calling the Virtual Cocoon.

They say it stimulates the senses so convincingly they have called the experience Real Virtuality.

Wowwwww.... man that is crazy.

Now imagine if you had a room where you and other people always communicated with eachother over a distance. You could have a small camera on a pole coming down from the ceiling on a motorized grid so that it could move anywhere in the room and rotate any direction.
Then project a hologram of your body into the room, aligning the head with the camera, so they always move together. So your friend would 'see' you standing in the room, moving around, and on your end wearing the headset, you could stand on a 360-degree 'disc' treadmill that would transfer your movement to the hologram, and your vision would be linked to the camera obviously, so you could literally "walk around" in a distant room, speaking with your friend naturally, and THEY in turn would also see you and speak directly to a full-sized hologram of you!

That would be freaking awesome. This headset is definitely a big step towards that. Now if they could just have distant sensors that detect environmental smells and flavors, translate them into a mathematical formula, send it to the headset, and have it rearrange them via a combination of built-in chemicals to vaporize and put into the helmet/headset. Yes!

They can probably already do this! If they had the $$ and the will to do so, that is.
