I have a feeling that there may be a number of ET societies out there. They know what we are going through, until we get beyond this warrior mentality they'll look at us as the rednecks of the universe. If we ever do get beyond it, they just might teach us how to use nuclear power safely.

Hey, it takes a lot of smarts to get all the way up to President of The United States. And if the President of The United States pronounces it "Nukular", then that MUST be how you say it! DUH!!

No but, it is possible that there are other civilizations out there, perhaps quite likely. But even if they do see us as the rednecks in the galaxy or universe, we are rednecks with Nukular Weppins, which we could use to annihilate the entire planet.
So - wouldn't NOW be the time for them to interfere and make their presence known, to help us over this hurdle of our own immaturity and self-hostility? If they don't help us now, then we may not be around later to evolve from 'rednecks' up to 'classy galactic citizens'.
It's like in Contact, when the panel asks Jodie Foster what one question she would ask of an alien race. She says she would ask them "how'd you do it?" in reference to getting over the volatile, potentially destructive period of evolution.
It's a good question, potentially the most important question we could possibly ask ourselves as a species. And one which we seem to be completely oblivious to.
I would personally welcome some extraterrestrial intervention.

Maybe they have some kind of Prime Directive as set forth in the Star Trek generations of shows towards us, because they know that there is that higher way of thinking in our society. They don't want to frighten the Sarah Palins into firing a nucular missle at them.

They've probably seen all the science 'fiction' movies we've created, and their civilization grew out of throwing fear into it's population.

Perhaps... but as far as I know the Sarah Palin's of the world do not have access to nuclear launch-triggers.
I would assume that being so far advanced and evolved, they would have a pretty good idea of how to approach us in a peaceful and kind way, to minimize fear and any neanderthalian, aggressive "defense" response.
I think it could be done. Especially if they brought us some sort of peace-offering, you know like some cool new technology, or like a really awesome movie from their homeworld, in 3d that teaches us all about them. That would rule.
