The famous Swiss chemist who discovered/invented LSD in a laboratory in 1938 has just died of a heart attack. I remember reading articles about this guy in OMNI magazine when I was 13. His story always fascinated me, even when the idea of the drug itself didn't.
The crazy part of the story is that Mr. Hofmann himself used LSD many, many times over the decades, and yet was mentally sound and healthy in his old age, until his death yesterday...at the age of 102! Crazy...
Here's the whole article, which if you pay attention tries really hard to put a negative spin on LSD, like they're afraid that this story alone might cause people to go out and try it. Ha!

wow,
another one of those mythological old guys passes on..:(
Weak article.
I they talked so much about how scary and bad LSD was but not as much about HIM.. Looked freaking good for a 102 year old(im sure that picture had to have been a little earlier- other wise the pharmacutical co. might want to look into the ageing process being held off by LSD)
Im curious about his book, since they hadnt really dicussed what it was about aside from the title.

Well, if it gives you a clue as to how misleading the article is about it here's part of a review from amazon.com:

"Underlying it all is Dr. Hofmann's powerful conclusion that mystical experience may be our planet's best hope for survival. Whether induced by LSD, meditation, or arising spontaneously, such experiences help us to comprehend "the wonder, the mystery of the divine‹in the microcosm of the atom, in the macrocosm of the spiral nebula, in the seeds of plants, in the body and soul of people."

More than sixty years after the birth of Albert Hofmann's problem child, his vision of its true potential is more relevant, and more needed, than ever."
